How Was The Roman Army So Effective?

This term, the children of Class 3 have been researching the Roman invasion of Britain. After reviewing the equipment of a Roman soldier we created our own scutum (shield). 

We practiced our marching around the hall. Fortunately, when ambushed pupils were able to get into a testudo formation to deflect the incoming projectiles.
